Beauty Is Personal: Finding What Works for You
For years, I believed there was a “right” way to look beautiful. Social media, magazines, and even conversations with friends painted this picture of perfection—clear skin, perfectly styled hair, and clothes that looked like they walked straight off a runway. Not to mention a figure that could grace the cover of a Victoria’s Secret catalog. It felt impossible to keep up, and honestly, exhausting. Over time, I’ve realized something that changed how I approach beauty: there’s no one-size-fits-all. Beauty is personal, and the most important thing is finding what works for you.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes me feel confident and beautiful. For me, it’s less about trends and more about small, intentional practices that fit into my day. My clothing choices are tailored around what feels good when I wear it. As such, I tend to ignore trends. Customize your experience and make your skincare and clothing choices work for you.
But finding what works for you isn’t always easy. I’ve had my fair share of trial and error. There was the time I tried that viral diet that had me eating only 400 calories a day—I now know how silly that kind of thinking was. But at the time, it was the thing to do if you wanted to lose weight. Then there was the closet full of trendy clothes that looked amazing on other people but just didn’t feel like me. I kept buying clothing from fast fashion stores that only cared about the bottom line. As a large-busted girl, the tops looked amazing on the models, but when I put them on, over half my chest would spill out.
Those moments weren’t failures, though. They were lessons, and they helped me get closer to understanding what I love and what makes me feel good.
Decluttering has played a big part in that journey. Recently, I’ve been going through old boxes, pulling out items I haven’t used or worn in years. Some of them brought back sweet memories, but others just reminded me of phases where I tried to be someone I wasn’t. Letting go of those things feels freeing—it’s like I’m making space for more of what feels true to who I am now.
The same goes for beauty and fashion. I’ve stopped holding on to skincare products that don’t work for me and clothes that don’t make me feel confident. The hardest part has been letting go of items I paid a lot of money for, but that just don’t work with my skin or my body. However, letting them go has been freeing because I’m able to find homes for the things around me. They say your home is a representation of your inner space, which I really feel is true.
Instead, I’m focusing on building routines and a wardrobe that reflect where I am in life right now. It’s not about perfection or following every trend—it’s about finding joy in the little things that make me feel like myself.
If you’re on your own journey to discovering what works for you, my advice is this: start small. Try one new thing at a time, whether it’s a skincare product, a new outfit combination, or even just wearing your hair differently. Pay attention to how it makes you feel. If it doesn’t work, let it go without guilt. And if it does, hold onto it and celebrate that win.
At the end of the day, beauty isn’t about fitting into someone else’s mold. It’s about creating your own definition—one that feels authentic and empowering. And honestly? That’s the kind of beauty that truly shines.
I’ll leave you with one of the most beautiful quotes I’ve come across:
“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.”
— Judy Garland
